English Language for International Students
Florida Prep offers an immersive and distinguished ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program for students from outside the United States the moment they step foot onto our campus.
Declared the "best ESOL program in the State of Florida" by the Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS), this is a signature offering at Florida Prep that provides a foundational stepping stone for international students to master English language skills and American cultural perspectives.
With personalized learning plans, ESOL students are immersed in regular and structured interactions with native speakers on campus and in the local community. The majority of ESOL students on campus board with English speakers.
Students enrolled in the ESOL program at Florida Prep attend daily sessions taught by faculty who specialize in the instruction of English as a second language. All core curriculum classes—e.g., Math, History, Science—are taught exclusively in English.
In the event students struggle with this dynamic immersion, they are encouraged to take advantage of daily Teacher After School Help, One-on-one Classroom Assistance, and Peer guidance. ESOL at Florida Prep is designed to ensure that our international students are well prepared for success in the classroom and after graduation within the American college and university system.
Field Trips & Activities
Alongside regular classroom activities, students enrolled in the ESOL program also enjoy regular field trips to practice their language skills in person. These trips include visits to restaurants, entertainment venues, and other locations where students can use their English skills in real-life situations.
To ensure that students are ready for these experiences, ESOL teachers tailor lesson plans for these activities to include, for example, knowledge of menus, speaking with servers, and handling basic transactions. Students overwhelming report that these real-world sessions and trips are a great boost to their confidence. All these visits, of course, are chaperoned by the classroom instructors who are ready to assist in case of any confusion or difficulty.
